～を～と勘違いしているって英語でなんて言うの？

海外の人から、日本と中国は同じ国で、同じ言葉を使うんだよね？と言われて「違う国だし、言葉も全然違う！」と言ったのですが、それを第三者に話す時に「彼らは日本と中国を同じ国だと勘違いしていた」と英語でなんというのでしょうか？
