直訳に近づけるなら上のような言い方ができるかなと思います。ちょっと遠回しにも感じますが。

日本語だと「びっくりする」「びっくりさせる」なんですが、基本の surprise が「驚かせる」なので、be surprised という受け身の形で「驚く」になります。
自然な英語に近づけるなら、以下のような言い方もお勧めします。
They are getting married. We’re surprised but they didn’t think they would do that themselves.
