I became fatter than I had been.

  • I've put on weight.

  • I've gained weight.

When it comes to weight gain most people are self conscious and will not want to tell others exactly how much weight they have gained. So these answers are quick, to the point statements to tell someone that you have 'put on' weight' without going in to any detail with regards to how much weight, or how you have put on the weight.
I've put on weight. (https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/41018/) I've gained weight.

  • I've gained some weight.

  • I've put on a few extra pounds.

The two sentences you see above are great ways to express that you have gained some weight. In the second sentence you will see the phrase put on a few extra pounds. We use this phrase in our everyday conversation when we want to express that we have gained weight. You may hear this phrase on television or in a movie. It would make a great addition to your vocabulary.

  • I have gained weight

  • I have put on weight

  • I have put on a few more pounds/kgs

You could say this in a number of different ways. You could say I have gained weight or I have put on weight. You could also say how much weight you have gained. For example I have put on 10 pounds or I have put on 5kg. Some people will not want to say exactly how much weight they have gained and in this instance it is better to say that you have gained weight or put on weight.
例えば: "I have gained weight."(体重が増えました) "I have put on weight."(体重が増えました) どのくらい増えたか言うこともできます。 その場合は「I have gained weight」「I have put on weight」と言うといいです。

  • I have gained a lot of weight

  • I'm fatter now than I was before

  • I'm fatter than I used to be

A very common situation is when we gain weight as we get older. Our metabolism and fat burning capabilities slow down. We very often say I have gained weight since then, or since I was younger. I am fatter now than I was before or I am fatter now than I was when I was young. But we usually use fat and fatter when a person has gained a lot of weight. It's not such a nice word to use. It's nicer to say gain weight or overweight. I am more overweight now than I was before. If anything is true now but wasn't in the past or was true in the past and not now, we use "used to be". I'm fatter than I used to be, I'm bigger than I used to be, I've have more weight on me now than I used to.
I have gained weight since then/since I was younger.(それから/年を取って体重が増えました) I am fatter now than I was before(前よりも太りました) I am fatter now than I was when I was young.(若いときよりも太りました) ただし、"fat" や "fatter" は普通体重が大幅に増えたときに使われます。 I am more overweight now than I was before.(前よりも太りました) "used to be" は、現在と過去とで事実が異なるときに使われます。 I'm fatter than I used to be I'm bigger than I used to be I've have more weight on me now than I used to (前よりも太りました)

  • I have gained more weight than before.

  • I've picked up weight.

  • My weight has increased.

In many cultures, especially amongst women, weight is a very sensitive topic. Many people don't often like to hear that they have gained weight. This subject then, is best to steer clear of. It is often better for the person who has put on a few kilograms to admit it than for someone else to point it out. Using the word 'fat' is commonly known to be offensive. Example: Moe: You are looking well, Jinko-san. Jinko: Thank you. Although I feel very embarrassed that I have picked up so much weight since I last saw you.
Moe: You are looking well, Jinko-san. Jinko: Thank you. Although I feel very embarrassed that I have picked up so much weight since I last saw you.

Our weight can be something that we're sensitive about, and maybe embarrassed to discuss. This is the case particularly for women. Sometimes you'll hear someone say something about having gained weight because they're 'fishing for compliments'. This means that they're hoping you'll be polite and tell them that they haven't, thus giving them a compliment! Whilst it's OK for someone to tell you that they have gained weight, it would generally be impolite for you to point it out.
