adjoiningは「隣の」という意味ですので、飛行機での隣同士の席は adjoining seats（複数形: 必ず2人以上になるから）です。　ホテルの場合は人数制限がある所がほとんどですが、1人～複数人が1部屋に泊まれます。　なので、「１つ隣の部屋空いてますか？」という聞き方になる訳です。
