「手すり」は handrail と言いますが、railing の方が自然な言い方になります。
これはネイティブの人の多くが necktie を tie と呼ぶのと同じ感じです。
necktie は間違いではないですが、tie の方がよく使われるように、handrail も間違いではないですが、railing の方がよく使われると思います。
I can't get down the stairs without using the railing.
のようにも言えます。
「階段を降りる」は get down the stairs
「手すりを使わずに」は without using the railing
のように言えます。
