popular restaurants と言えばかなり抽象的ですが、ぐるなびなどのサイトで評価が高いということでしたら、ratings (評価)という言葉を使って restaurants with high ratings (高評価のレストラン)という表現もできます。
"A five star restaurant" is the most common way to refer to a restaurant with high ratings on the internet. Having five stars means that they have met the highest ratings a place can receive. It shows that their standards are very high, with great quality, delicious food. Which can possibly lean more towards the expensive price range as well.
"Well known restaurant" simply means that this restaurant is "the talk of the town." Majority of the people you ask will know about this restaurant.
If you are traveling and want to experience what the natives or locals have, then asking for a "local favorite" is the best way to go! Local favorites may not have a five star rating on the internet but it does in locals' perspectives. Trying out a "local favorite" is the best way to emerge yourself in their culture.

The usual way of referring to top quality hotels or restauarants in the UK is to refer to them as 5 star establishments. Of course there are other gradings for these venues such as 3 start or 4 star etc. Alternatively in these days of instant feedback, you may just say that a restaurant is highly rated.
