  • Unfortunately the rugby world cup match was cancelled as a result of the typhoon.

  • The rugby world cup match was called off because of the typhoon.

This is bad news and when you deliver this type of news you express your regret with word 'unfortunately.' An informal way of saying 'cancelled' is 'called off' so if you are talking to a friend you may use this vocabulary instead.

  • An extreme weather event!

  • The typhoon that caused the world cup rugby to be cancelled, was an extreme weather event!

More and more we seem to hear of" out of the ordinary" or "extreme weather events" causing chaos around the world. Is this part of the changing global weather patterns associated with WARMING? We would describe a typhoon of this ferocious nature to be categorised as an EXTREME Weather event.

  • The match was cancelled due to a typhoon.

  • The match was abandoned due to the typhoon.

  • The match had to be cancelled because of the typhoon

To cancel an event means to decide that the event will not happen: so we use cancel if the decision is made before the start of the event. eg: - Several matches were cancelled due to a Typhoon / due to the Typhoon, several matches were cancelled. - The match had to be cancelled because of the typhoon. / Due to the typhoon, the match had to be cancelled. To 'abandon' means to stop an activity without completing it. Usually we would use 'abandon' if the match has already commenced but is unable to continue - for example the match started at 4pm but had to be abandoned at 5:30pm due to poor weather conditions.

  • A Rugby World Cup match was cancelled due to the typhoon.

Using this sentence is a straight forward way to describe that the rugby match had to be cancelled due to the typhoon. Due to the severity of the typhoon, it was a good call to make to make sure the players/staff/fans were kept safe by cancelling the rugby game.

  • They cancelled the rugby world cup match due to the typhoon.

  • The rugby world cup match got cancelled because of the typhoon.

If you would like to explain to someone that the rugby world cup match was cancelled because of a typhoon, you can say something like "They cancelled the rugby world cup match due to the typhoon.". We can use words like "due" and "because" to express WHY it got cancelled.

  • The rugby world cup match was cancelled due to a typhoon.

  • Due to a typhoon, the rugby world cup match was cancelled.

Notice that in these two sentences, we have have movement within the sentence while also keeping the same meaning. We can either have the phrase, "due to the typhoon," either come at the beginning or the end of the sentence.

  • Cancelled due to the typhoon.

All an event such as the rugby world cup needs is a typhoon really. Not at all. When trying to explain this you can use the phrase above. Example; The rugby world cup match was cancelled/postponed due to the typhoon.
