両方とも「～を[捨てる](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/32626/)」という意味の表現ですが、ニュアンスが若干ながら異なります。
一つ目は、そのままモノを捨てることを指します。[ごみ箱](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/25609/)に投じる、ごみ回収に出すなど物理的に捨てることです。
二つ目は、ただ捨てるだけでなく、「[処理する](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/36374/)」ところまでニュアンスとして含みます。例えば、落ち葉を焼いて片付けた、などであれば

とは言えますが
"I threw away the leaves"
とは言いません。
様々な方法で処理するであろう不特定多数のモノを捨てる際には、こちらの方がいいかもしれません。
