I want to participate in the event but it's not being held near my house so I can't.
「○○の近く」は英語で “near○○” で表現できます。
使い方を紹介します。
例：
「家の近くに駅がない」→ There are no stations near my house.
「職場の近くにコンビニがたくさんあります」→ There are many convenience stores near my work place.
「テレビの近くにあります」→ It’s near the TV.
「イベントに参加したいけど、」は I want to participate in the event but… になります。
「やっていない」は「イベント」の場合にnot being held で表現できます。
「○○に参加する」 → participate in○○
全部まとめて、
「イベントに参加したいけど、家の近くではやっていないのでなかなか参加ができないです」
→ I want to participate in the event but it’s not being held near my house so I can’t.

この場合、次のような言い方ができますよ。

「そのイベントに参加してみたいが、家の近くではやっていないので参加したことがない」
to take part in ... で「…に参加する」
to participate でも「参加する」と’言えます。
