「正体」は大体「true nature」となります。こういう場合では「identity」もいいけど、「true nature」の方が適当だと思います。
おっしゃった通りに、「we are still in the process of understanding」や「we don't have reliable information」はもちろん伝わる気がします。
「ので」は「because」や「since」や「as」を使うことができます。どれでも使ってもいいです。
上記の三つの例のように、「余計不安になる」という訳し方は色々あります。
