  • An overnight trip

  • A weekend away

  • A few days away

An overnight trip refers to just one night away. As you are away for just one night, this usually means that you have not travelled too far to get there and back. A weekend away describes going away on the weekend, the two days off in a week where you do not go to work. In the UK and Japan, this is Saturday and Sunday. In Egypt and many other countries in the Middle East, this is Friday and Saturday. A few days away is anything from 2 to 6 days away. If it was 7 or more, it would be considered 'a week away'.

  • I am going on a quick trip for a couple of nights.

  • I am taking a weekend away from home.

  • I will be away on a short excursion.

All of these indicates that you will be away for a few days and nights. 1) I am going on a quick trip for a coupe of nights. - This means that you will be away for just 2 nights and that you will be back shortly. The word "couple" should be used for either 2 nights or 2 days, because 'couple' refers to a pair of things. 2)I am taking a weekend away from home. - This statement is used to refer to trips taken at the end of the week. They usually mean that you are going away and staying at another place for 3 days at the most ( Friday, Saturday, Sunday) 3) I will be away on a short excursion. - very similar to the first one. You just replace the word "trip" with the word excursion. Excursion is used to indicate something a bit more exciting that you will be doing (something pleasurable) . So when you say "John had an excursion this weekend", you are referring to something exciting that happened.

A trip/vacation that only lasts for a short time (2 days/1 night) can be described simply as a 'short trip' or a 'weekend trip' (because a weekend is 2 days and 1 night). I'm taking a short vacation this weekend to Yokohama.

  • A short trip.

  • A short holiday.

  • A mini-break.

Enjoy your short trip, even though it is not so far away, hope you have a good time. And, if you go a little bit further next time, it could be classed as a mini-break. I would say a mini-break refers to going on holiday, away from where you live, for a couple of days. I hope this helps. Have a great day. Will

  • I'm taking a mini-break just to get away for a day or two.

  • I'm taking a short-break of a day or two.

1. I'm taking a mini-break just to get away for a day or two. A mini-break is a very short holiday. Just to get away for a day or two means to escape from the stresses of work or from a bad relationship or situation that you are finding yourself in currently. 2. I'm taking a short-break of a day or two. A short-break is a short vacation. The fact that it's for a day or two is pretty self-explanatory, i.e. you will not be going too far from home.

  • Out of town, for a few days.

When making use of these sentences, you are saying that you will be away from home for a few days. In the sentence, 'I'll be out of town, for a few days' indicates that you not be in your hometown or city. You could be visiting a city nearby. You'll only use the phrase, 'out-country' if you're actually leaving your country and visiting another one. A short trip means that you'll be away only for a few days before returning home. However, a weekend away also indicates a short trip but that typically means you will be away for Saturday and Sunday - sometimes including Friday and Monday too, in which we would say 'long weekend.'

Notice how we can either use the words, "trip," or, "holiday," to represent the idea of leaving your city to go somewhere, even if its very close to home. We can also interchangeably use many different adjectives such as, "short," "small," and, "little," to describe the length of the trip.
