「事情」を「human relationships」にすれば、話題はもっとわかりやすくなると思います。
後は、「heard」＝「聴いた」の代わりに「learned」＝「習った」の方がこの状況では自然だと思います。いろいろ勉強になったと言うニュアンスがするからです。

このシチュエーションだと次のように言うと自然で良いかなと思います。

「友達から人間関係についてたくさん聞いた」
ーI heard a lot of interesting things about human relationships.
「人間関係についての面白いことをたくさん聞いた」
ーThat was the first time I had heard about things like that, so I was quite shocked.
「そのことについて聞いたのは初めてだったので、かなり驚いた」
That was the first time I had heard about ... で「…について聞いたのは初めてだった」
to be shocked で「驚く・衝撃を受ける」
