★ be doing
「現在進行形」は「今…している」という意味でよく使われますね。これ以外に「確定的な予定」を表すこともできます。
「秋に」ということでしたら、すでに出場する大会なども決まっているでしょうか。「確定した予定」であれば、現在進行形がピッタリですよ。

Sentence one is for the case where someone has an idea to run a marathon but perhaps has not done anything about it yet - such as pay for entering the marathon.

To participate in something means to take part in something.
