例、
家賃は三か月前から払ってない場合は、I am three months behind in my rent. 家賃の滞納はもう三か月たったという意味です。
滞納のもう一つの意味はoverdue.
例えば、図書館から貸し出しした本は締め切りが一週間がたったのに返却してない。場合は、”My library book is one week overdue."と言います。

と表すこともできます。

If you are paying late, it is really helpful if you can mention before the due date for payment that you may be a little late. No doubt you will be asked why the payment is late, or will be late. So an explanation is expected.

I am sorry that my rent is late, there was a problem with debit orders at the bank.
Usually, when one pays one's rent late, it will be because one did not receive one's salary in time, or there was a problem at the bank, such as the bank's internet facility not working properly. Normally one has to inform the landlord as to why he/she has failed to pay the rent in time. Some landlords do not tolerate overdue rent.
So, you may say to your landlord:
I am sorry that my rent is overdue, my salary was paid late.
or
I am sorry that my rent is late, there was a problem with debit orders at the bank.
通常、家賃の支払いが遅れると、給料が振り込まれなかったからや、銀行でインターネット回線のトラブルがあったりします。
通常は支払いが遅れることがわかったら事前に伝えなくてはなりません。
待ってくれない大家さんもいますよ。
