If you're talking about a time in the past when you went diving for the first time you would say something like "I went diving for the first time when I was on vacation in Brazil". However, if you're talking in the present, when you're about to dive for the first time, you would say "I've never done this before. It's my first time diving."

There are many ways to say that you are a beginner at diving. You can use diving as a verb or a noun, or even use the word ‘diver’.
Examples for using diving as a noun:
I’m a beginner at diving.
I’m a rookie at diving.
Example for using diving as a verb:
I have never gone diving before today.
You can also say: I am a rookie diver.
If you say any of these sentences to someone, they will understand that you have no previous experience with diving.

The two sentences you see above are great ways to express that is your first time doing something. The two nouns you see in the two sentences(newbie and first-timer) both mean that you are trying something for the first time. Both of these words are appropriate for informal settings and would be a great addition to your vocabulary.
