Using the word "place" is a great way of showing a direct command of where you want/expect something to go.
As well as showing clear direction, it is also considered to be more polite than "put".
Having said that, put is perfectly accepted when using the correct tone/intonation.
Examples:
A: Sir, your March reports are ready. > B: Thanks. If you could place it on my desk and I'll have a look at them in just a moment.
Could you just place it on my desk please? I can't look at that right now.
I need to finish this. Please could you place it on my desk for me?
