This word is similar to [撤退](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/72018/)する. However, 撤退する is used for groups and 辞退する is used for individuals. Take care not to interchange them.

これは decline 又は refuse と言います。Refuse がちょっと強めな言葉なので、decline の方が普通です。
例えば「仕事でリーダーになって欲しいと言われたのですが、辞退しました」は I was asked to be the leader at work, but I declined と言えます。but I refused とも言えますが、declined が一番適切だと思います。

(3) I am very grateful for this offer, but I'll have to politely decline.
(4) I am very grateful for this offer, but I'll have to politely decline I'm afraid.
(1)と(2) の表現は、一番丁寧な言い方だと思います。後、その判断の理由もつけたい場合は、下記の言い方ではいかがでしょうか。
- The amount of responsibility that would come with the new job would be a significant stress factor for me.
--- ...I'm afraid = 残念ですが、。。。
