「本質」＝「Essence」。
ですが、文書の内容によって、他の訳し方も存在します。
例えば、以前の回答で「[物事の本質](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/100794/)を[見極める](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/50198/)」はなっていうの？と聞かれた事があります。
その際には「See things for what they really are」と訳しました。
上記の場合だと、難しい言葉を使うより、シンプルな言葉を並べて「本質」の意味をキャッチしました。
Essenceを使うなら、下記の例を参照してください：
- The essence of Japanese culture is "Wa"
- The essence of Italian cuisine is simplicity
1.) essence (本質) 「本質」は英語でessenceと訳せます。Essenceは普通に一番たいせつな本質という意味があります。Essenceは普通に無形なことです。

2.) nature (本質) 「本質」は英語でnatureとも訳せます。Natureは普通に物の特徴なことです。Natureはessenceより有形なことです。

「本質」を意味する英語には “essence” と “nature” があります。
“essence” は物事の性格を決定づける、本来備わっている最も重要な「本質」を意味し、特に目
に見えないものに対して使われます。
She finally grasped the essence of marketing.
「彼女はとうとうマーケティングの本質を把握した」
finally 「とうとう、最終的に」
grasp 「把握する、理解する」
“nature” も「本質」を意味しますが、目に見えるものにも使われ、いくつかある「本質」のうちに一つを指します。「性質」や「性格」とも訳すことが出来ます。
The spread of the Internet has impacted on society and changed the nature of society.
「インターネットの普及は私たちの社会にインパクトを及ぼしその本質に変化を生んだ」
spread 「広がり、普及」
本来〜重要な部分をheart of matterと言います。少し難しい使い方ですが：
The heart of the matter lies in understanding different cultures.
この件で重要（本来）なのは、違う文化を理解することだ。
ここで、heart=the vital part or the most important partで。
