卒業論文のために、難しい本をたくさん読まないといけなくて気が重い。

to feel the weigh of ... を使って「気が重い」を表現できます。
lay ahead は lie ahead の過去形で「待ち受ける・前途に横たわる」という意味です。

「たくさんの本を読まなければいけないプレッシャーに気が重い。」
to feel weighed down by ... でも「気が重い」表現できると思います。
