この場合、The people behind the scenesとよく言います。Behind the scenesは「黒幕」という意味。

The people in the backgroundとも言います。文字通りの意味（背景にいる人）です。なので、We couldn't have done it without the help of all the people in the backgroundとも言えますが、people in the backgroundより people behind the scenesの方が聞く頻度は高いです。
