When answering "How are you?" if you day has been uneventful, you can answer like this: "Nothing special." which mean just that, that nothing interesting or exciting had happened that day.
"How are you?" と聞かれて、もしその日が特に何もない日だった場合は、このように答えることが出来ます：

誰に会っても（知っている人でも知らない人でも）How are you? How was your day? と始まるのが英語のコミュニケーションです。ここで日本人は、（えーと、どんな日だったっけ？。。。ま、別に何もなかったしな～）と考えてしまい、決して自分のことをポジティブに語らないという、【日本語のフィルター】を通して答えてしまいます。基本的に、自分の日々のことをポジティブに語らない習慣が日本人にはありますね（「儲かりまっか～？」→「ぼちぼちでんな～」と答えても、ものすごく儲かってる可能性があります！）
【日本語のフィルター】をどけて英語を英語としてとらえた場合は、どんな時でも、I had a nice (good) day. くらいで答えておきましょう(^^;

Just the same old story
If there is nothing unusual about your day, you can just say that it was nothing special. This is a very common and natural response when asked about your day. If you want to be more colloquial, you can simply say it was "the same old stuff just a different day" which is a more jovial response.
"Just the same old story" is a good idiom to use in these situations.
もし、いつもと変わらない一日だったら、"nothing special"（ごく普通）が使えます。
これはとても一般的な言い方で、一日のことを自然に表現しています。
もっと話し言葉で言いたい場合は、シンプルに
"the same old stuff just a different day"
（いつもと変わらない日）
と言う事も出来ます。これは、より陽気な回答です。

これは、このような状況で使えるイディオムです。
The first example sentence is an informal expression which means that the day and everything about it was normal and probably a little boring or mundane. The second sentence alludes to a cult film: 'Groundhog Day' in which the main protagonist (Bill Murray) is caught in a time warp that causes the same day to be continuously repeated.
"today was a typical day" typical meaning a normal day for you, what you normally do everyday.
"it's the norm" is slang for saying a normal day as always.
"today's the same as always" is another was of saying it's another normal day, like usual.
