If someone is stealing your things by entering your house, perhaps in the middle of the night, we wouldn't use the word thief, we would use the word 'burglar' or less frequently 'robber'. However, the general term for someone who steals things is a 'thief'. Be careful of the spelling of this, many people get the 'i' and the 'e' the wrong way round!

I have taught many of my students the word "Shoplifters" recently because that is the English-language name of a Japanese movie that is on many "Best of 2018" lists. A student told me that the literal translation of the Japanese title is "Family of Thieves". In the movie, the father of the family teaches his children how to shoplift -- how to watch for store employees and time your escape from the store.
最近私は多くの生徒に"Shoplifters"(万引きする人)という単語を教えました。というのも、これは2018年のベスト映画としてたくさんのリストに載った邦画の英題だからです。
生徒の1人によれば、この映画の邦題の直訳は"Family of Thieves"(泥棒家族)だそうです。この映画では父親が子どもたちに、店員の見張り方や店から逃げるタイミングなど、万引の仕方を教えます。
