ドラマは tv series (テレビシリーズ)と言います。

It is not necessary to say the genre. Through the conversation it will be relieved what kind of show it is. You can use the word, 'show' and 'series' interchangeably through the conversation. I would say something like this, "Have you heard about _(name of show)_? It is a pretty popular show."

When a television show is one of the most popular right now and you want to speak about it; you can use the following phrases: "a popular TV drama/series" or "the hottest show on TV right now". For example, you can say something like:
-Scandal is (one of) the hottest television series right now.
-Scandal is a popular TV drama written by Shonda Rhimes.
「今一番流行っている（人気の）テレビ」は、"a popular TV drama/series" または "the hottest show on TV right now" と言うことができます。
例：
-Scandal is (one of) the hottest television series right now.
「スキャンダル」は、今一番キているテレビドラマです。
-Scandal is a popular TV drama written by Shonda Rhimes.

Drama' is such a loose word that in the UK, we would rarely mention it when speaking about a TV series. When you think about it, there is drama in any TV programme, be the genre love, detective or historical or whatever. When speaking about long-running TV series depicting family life we would usually label such programmes 'soaps'.
"The most popular soap in the UK is Coronation Street."
「drama」はとても曖昧な言葉なので、イギリスではテレビドラマについて話す時に使われることはほとんどありません。
考えてみれば、どんな番組にも「drama」はありますね、恋愛ものにしろ、探偵ものにしろ、歴史ものにしろ、、、
長い間続いている、家族の日常を描いたテレビドラマ。こうした番組は普通「soap」に分類されます。

The three sentences you see above are terrific ways to express that a television series is currently popular. In the first and third sentence you will notice the words hit and smash. These words mean that a TV show, song, or movie was successful. These words would be a great addition to your vocabulary. I hope these sentences and this explanation help you out!
