kettle は薬缶（[やかん](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/65823/)）のことで、potと言ってしまうと[お鍋](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/36501/)という意味になります。
[お湯を沸かす](https://eikaiwa.dmm.com/uknow/questions/4196/)ものはkettleといえば通じやすいと思います。
すぐにお湯が沸く電気ケトルはelectric kettle と呼びます。保温機能のないものがほとんどですね。
一方魔法瓶はメーカー名からthermosということが多いです。そこで、湯沸かし機能の付いた魔法瓶は、造語ですが thermo-pot と呼ぶ人もいます。ほぼ日本独自のものなので、日本語のポットが使われているんですね。
ところで家電販売店のカタログを見ると、ボタンを押すとお湯が出てくる湯沸かしポットは
Hot water dispenser （お湯サーバー）という分類になっています。確かに分類すればそうなるかもしれませんね。
これは使う相手によって使い分ける感じでしょうか？
家族にはkettleで通じるでしょうし、友達に説明するときはthermo-pot、お店で買いたいときやビジネスのときは Hot water dispenser でしょう。

If it's on the stove we can also call it a "pot".
