kettle は薬缶（やかん）のことで、potと言ってしまうとお鍋という意味になります。
お湯を沸かすものはkettleといえば通じやすいと思います。
すぐにお湯が沸く電気ケトルはelectric kettle と呼びます。保温機能のないものがほとんどですね。
一方魔法瓶はメーカー名からthermosということが多いです。そこで、湯沸かし機能の付いた魔法瓶は、造語ですが thermo-pot と呼ぶ人もいます。ほぼ日本独自のものなので、日本語のポットが使われているんですね。
ところで家電販売店のカタログを見ると、ボタンを押すとお湯が出てくる湯沸かしポットは
Hot water dispenser （お湯サーバー）という分類になっています。確かに分類すればそうなるかもしれませんね。
これは使う相手によって使い分ける感じでしょうか？
家族にはkettleで通じるでしょうし、友達に説明するときはthermo-pot、お店で買いたいときやビジネスのときは Hot water dispenser でしょう。

We use "kettle" if it is the container we used to heat the water.
If it's on the stove we can also call it a "pot".
If it's electric we can call it an "electric kettle".
その容器を水を温めるために使うのであれば「kettle（やかん）」を使用します。
コンロの上におくのであれば、それを「pot（鍋）」と呼びます。
電気を使うのであれば、「electric kettle（電気式やかん）」と呼びます。

In Japan "Electric Kettles" are "the new kid on the block" and most homes still use a simple metal container on the stove...It's kind of traditional;-)
(Just as Central heating is quite rare too...)
日本では、'Electric Kettles'（電気ポット）は「新参者」（"the new kid on the block" というイディオム）で、
ほとんどの家庭ではいまだにコンロの上に置くシンプルな金属の入れ物を使っていますよね。
これはある種の伝統ですね。
(集中暖房設備もまだあまり見ませんが、それと同じですね・・・)
