Hip is a slang for fashionably current, and in the know. To be hip is to have "an attitude, a stance" in opposition to the "unfree world", or to what is square, or prudish. You could say, "I know a hip cafe called Ginny's." Probably you mean, 'fashionable right now,' or 'stylishly quirky,' or 'with some unusual design features' etc? In summary, 'hip' is an appropriate adjective for a trendy cafe, although you may need to add some detail to explain exactly what is special about this place.

This is a formal way of saying about a shop, restaurant etc. You will more commonly hear it on a tour, a blog, and very sophisticated situations. "The Lumber on the high street is prestigious and acclaimed. We had an excellent Wellington there." That place is hip hop! - Maybe Americans say this, but if you say this to someone not American or not brought up in the 80's, I am pretty sure they will find it hilarious. Good if you have a sense of humour. If I were to use this phrase it would be in kind of a sarcastic way.

...... is a really funky place/shop/cafe- The word funky is more similar to hip, the word hip is not often associated with a place that is fancy. I would use hip to describe somewhere that is alternative or cool. Funky has a similar meaning. Another word could be quirky. a quirky cafe would be unusual or different to others. There is a really upmarket place to eat in London called.......- Upmarket means stylish or 'posh', it is a good way to describe something that is more expensive or classy. There is a swanky new cafe called.........- Swanky is similar in meaning to upmarket although it is less formal.

Trendy Restaurant - This term is used to talk about something fashionable and up to date with the times. "This is the most trendy restaurant in the area." "Are you looking for a trendy restaurant in the area?" "The most trendy restaurant in the area is called Louis' BBQ." Popular Spot - Something that is enjoyed by many people. "This is a popular spot for the locals to eat." "Tom will take you to the popular spot for hotdogs in the city." "The most popular spot for seafood is at Lou's Seafood."
