後は、もちろん詳しいところまで言うと、意味は異なりますが(「無神論」は「無宗教」と違うからです）、とても言いやすい表現で、意味がすぐ通じるからで、場合によっては、「I'm an atheist」でも考えられます。

"I am not a religious person."
This tells someone that you do not attend religious services. You might go occasionally for special occasions, but not often and probably only because someone asked you to go.
"I do not hold to any particular religion."
Hold to - This is a phrasal verb meaning to have a certain belief and to continue having that belief. By adding not before "hold to" that means you do not hold to that belief, thought, etc.
Particular - A specific church, denomination etc. You could also say, "I do not hold to a specific religious belief system."

Saying that you're an atheist means that you do not believe in the existence of God.
"I am not a religious person."
Someone who may be a part of a religion but doesn't actively practice. For example you can say that you're Christian, but you may not actively attend the religious services.

When you want to explain that you don't subscribe into any religion/religious belief, then you can say:

If you have no religious beliefs or you are unsure of what to think when it comes to religion you could describe yourself as an Atheist or a non believer. Or you could simply describe yourself as not religious.
If your family is religious but you are not you can say that you were bought up a certain religion but you do not practise this religion.
宗教を信仰していない人のことは、"Atheist"または"non believer"と表せます。もしくは、シンプルに"not religious"と表すこともできます。
家族は信心深いが自分はそうではないという場合は、
"I was brought up Christian but don't practice it anymore."
