苦しむって英語でなんて言うの？

「苦しむ」という言葉を英語で伝えると「suffer（苦しむ）」または「suffering（苦しんでいる）」という言葉になります。

「仕事で大変な思いをして苦しむことで成長できると思います」という文章を英語で表すと「I think I can grow by suffering through tough thoughts at work.」という文章を使っても良いと考えました。

「苦しむ」は英語で to suffer です。しかし、とても劇的な表現ですので、会話であまり使わないです。代わりに、to have a hard time の方が自然です。Hard time は「苦労」や「大変な時」の意味です。例えば、

That country has suffered from famine many times.
その国は何回も飢饉で苦しんでいました。

I think that by having a hard time at work, it will bring personal growth.
仕事で大変なことを苦しんだら、個人的な成長をしてきます。

「苦しむ」は英語で「suffer」ですが、病気や飢饉で人が苦しんでいるときに「suffer」を使いますが、仕事で同じレベルで苦しんでいるならもちろん「suffer」も使えます。

例文1:
One can grow from the unpleasant experiences and suffering one goes through at work.
仕事で大変な思いをして苦しむことで成長できると思います。

仕事は辛いですが飢饉や病気のレベルほどではない場合は「hard going」か「miserable」を使ったら大げさに聞こえません。

例文2:
One can grow even though one finds work unpleasant and hard going now.
例文3:
You might be going through a difficult time and feeling miserable now at work but you can grow as a result of these hard times.

to endure = 我慢する
to undergo = 苦しむ
to bear = 負担する、耐える

to endure hardships = 苦難に耐える

例：　Women usually endure an extreme amount of pain during childbirth.
女性は通常出産の時に極端な痛みに耐えます。

My cat had to undergo anesthesia during the operation.
私の猫は手術の時に麻酔を受けなければなりませんでした。

I couldn't bear seeing my ex-boyfriend with someone else.
私は元彼氏を他の彼女と見るのを我慢できなかったです。

「苦しむ」を英語にしたら、to go through hardships と言えます。hardship というのは「苦労」を指します。

その上、「仕事で大変な思いをして苦しむことで成長できると思います。」は "I think that we can grow going through hardships and reflecting on things at work." と翻訳できます。

上記の文章は「仕事で悪い経験でも、良くないことでも勉強になる」を表す。

苦しむことで成長していく

Some hardships are good in life　（若い人や働いている人へのメッセージ）
人生の中で多少苦労することは良いことである

sufferings=悲しいことに繋がっている苦しみです
hardships=苦労ですね
