The toilet is upstairs.
しかしアメリカ人はそう言われると、便座自体を想像して少しおかしく感じるので、多くのアメリカ人は「bathroom」か「restroom」と言います。
bathroomとrestroomの違い
bathroomの方は日常的ですが、restroomは丁寧です。どちらでも主にアメリカ人が使います。
toiletはヨーロッパの方がよく使います。
すみませんは相手の注意を引くときに「excuse me」と言います。
依頼のことですが、丁寧な場面でも「can I」を使う事が多いです。

１）「トイレ」の遠回しの表現です。カナダでは国民性もありこのwashroomを使う人が圧倒的に多いです。※アメリカ人に似ていると思われがちですが、カナダ人は日本人に近い国民性があり”恥じらいの文化”があります。
２）bathroomはアメリカで使われることが多いです。ただ、外（お店やレストラン）ではbath（お風呂）がない事が普通なのでrestroomを使う人もいます。
３）番外編: 非常にくだけた表現（俗語）です。イギリス系特有の言い方でイギリス系が多いカナダ（他にもオーストラリアやニュージーランド）ではたまに聞くことがあります。
