In order to explain to someone that you know someone but are not very close, it is best to refer to this person as an "acquaintance". This word is distinctly different to the word friend and means that this is someone whom you associated yourself with, but not to the extent you would a friend.

You would like to know what you call someone you are close to but do not know very well. Of course, you could categorise people in terms of whether you are associated through work - as a neighbour, or perhaps, socially. In that case, one of the above suggestions may fit your scenario. "John is a tennis club connection who also lives in my area."
"John is a tennis club connection who also lives in my area."

I bumped into a friend at the station. I have a friend who lives in Canada. I have a friend who works at Google.

I saw a business acquaintance of mine at the store. または「どこどこの知り合い」と言う場合は 'A person I know from...' I saw a man I know from work at the store.

Acquaintance. Associate. Friend. I think the best thing to call someone you know but aren't totally on a friend to friend basis is an acquaintance. Although, you can refer to them as a friend/ mate. To be honest, I would call them a friend or a mate, it is just simpler. However, it is you choice what you want to call them. I hope this helps. Have a great day. Will

When you know someone briefly, but not so well as to call them a friend, we would normally call them an acquaintance. You could also call them a contact, as they are a contact you know. 'I have a contact that could help you, let me give you his number' 'I have an acquaintance that loves to watch the football, maybe I could link you both up'

An acquaintance or colleague is a person that you know but do not know very well and not very close to. Unlike a friend, an acquaintance or colleague does not know much about your personal life. Colleague is someone that you work with but you are not close. For example: A: Is Jane coming to your birthday party? B: Oh no! She is just an acquaintance.

We can sometimes have many friends that we see all the time and we consider these people good friends, and we feel a special connection. However, we also have people that we don't see from time to time and the relationship between these people is not so strong. These people are called acquaintances. The actual word that would be used to describe someone that you have met already but you aren't very close yet is, "acquaintance," (ack kway tan ce) We can also call this person a new friend as this could describe that you don't know them very well yet. Example sentences : - This is my acquaintance, Harry. - We are just acquaintances.

These words are easily used as nouns to refer to someone that you are familiar with. We usually use the word "friend" to talk about someone that we have a friendly relationship with. However, we can differentiate between a friend and an acquaintance when the person doesn't have a friendly relationship with us. You merely know the person. This is an acquaintance/associate.

A person you know but are not very close to may be referred to as an "acquaintance" or an "associate". You may use these terms in the following ways: -My friend Sam has a number of friends which I am not very close to. I only see them as acquaintances. -Samantha is an associate. • acquiantance

We have known each other for 10 years.
